Do you play golf for money?  Teach golf or run golf clubs?  If so, you are then golf professional or colloquially called pro golfer.  If you want to play in an amateur tournament, you cannot.  Even if you have received money for playing golf even just once, you will be able to go back to your amateur status.

Therefore, if you are already a professional golfer, you can only join professional golfers’ tournament.  There are many golf tournaments for professional golfers and you surely will enjoy your status as professional golfer.

However, if you have received money for playing golf only once, and that you are not so confident in joining professional golf tournament, you may therefore transfer your knowledge to other means.  That is, teach golf to beginners, run golf courses or enter the business of selling golf equipments.

For professional golfers, it is also necessary that you join golf associations which will give you many options if competing on tournament is not what you want.

If you however are an amateur, you may of course want to become a professional golfer.  Professional golfers are mostly the elite and rich individuals to play golf for pleasure.  However, once a professional golfer, it is almost impossible for you to go back to your status as an amateur.  Thus, as an amateur learn everything you can and join tournaments to improve your game and enjoy the moment.

This is because once you have reach the level of a professional golfer, there may already be limited options for you.  You may either play on professional golfers’ tournaments or teach the craft to new players.

Where did the game of golf originate?

It was way back in the year 1297 that the game of golf was first recorded. This was said to have been in the Netherlands. The game was played with a crude stick plus a leather ball. Whoever hit the ball the furthest and in the least number of times was considered to be the winner.

The modern game of golf is thought to have originated in Scotland. The word golf was probably derived from the Dutch word “kolf” which means stick or club. The first 18 hole course was also in Scotland. Also the very first rules were said to have come from the Scots.

It wasn’t very long before the game had spread to England. It is said that the oldest playing course in the world is the Old Links at Musselburgh in East Lothian. It was reputed that Mary Queen of Scot was said to have played there back in 1567.

However golf courses have not always been made up of 18 holes. Early golfers at St Andrews made a trench through the rough land and played just eleven holes which were laid out end to end from the clubhouse to the far end of the property. Once reaching the end they would turn round and play back again therefore making a total of 22 holes. Gradually it was decided that some of the holes were too short so they became integrated and ended up as 18 holes as we know it today.

Golf equipment has developed markedly over the years In the 1930’s that the US Golf Association set a standard weight and size for golf balls. It was stated that the velocity of the golf ball should not exceed 250 feet per second and since this time it has continued to develop and make an impact on the way the game is played.

Another big factor the evolution of the golf club. The early ones were made up of wood. Hickory became the standard wood used for shafts and Persimmon was the choice of wood used for the club head because of its hardness and strength.  As the golf ball developed and became much more durable it was then that the iron headed clubs were introduced to the game. Steel shafts were said to have been developed in the 1890’s .

It was in the early 1970’s shaft technology was introduced to the use of graphite shafts with lightweight titanium heads which meant the head could be made much larger.

The equipment has been developed massively with the assistance of modern day technology and now we have more golf equipment than you would have imagined possible. Our forbears were not lucky enough to have such things as golf trolleys and golf buggies to transport them round the course. To help guide you in the right direction for purchasing your first set of golf clubs.

The first thing you should do is get your swing evaluated by a professional first. This way you can buy the clubs appropriate to your specifics. Those people somewhere who make golf clubs has a goal in life: to create golf clubs that maximize “the physics of a golfer’s swing” while allowing for a range of swing error to provide an accurate, yet forgiving shot. The better swing you have, of course, the less forgiving club you require.

Okay, so golf association rules state that you can have no more than fourteen clubs in your bag, one of which has to be a putter. So, we are left with thirteen clubs to get together. Let’s get started.

Woods
There are three woods that golfers need: the 1-driver, 3 and 5. The wood is a hollow-bodied large headed club. These clubs are used when you are 175 yards or more away from the green, specifically off the tee.

Irons
A standard set of irons consists of: 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9. Irons are typically used when you are 200 yards or less from the green. The closer you are to the green, the higher number iron you will use.
